Just a little off the back

Many of you posted concern about the picture of Aidan in the ER yesterday so I feel obliged to tell the whole story for those of you who were worried about Aidan. He is totally fine although he may have a lifelong fear of going to the hairdresser.

Yesterday we had a whole family Valentines Day planned. We were going to go out to breakfast, followed by glow in the dark mini-golf in Orem, and capped off by dinner and Back to the Future at our home. Unfortunately, our family fun day was cut short because I thought Aidan needed an impromptu haircut before we headed down to Orem. There was a Great Clips in the parking lot of the diner where we had breakfast so I thought, Hey, why not?

No, it was not great
Ten minutes into the haircut, Aidan races towards me crying. Not being a stranger to childhood dramatics, I thought maybe the hairdresser had just nicked him with the scissors. Uh, no. His ear was gushing blood and you could see that a little chunk of his ear had been sliced off. Not like the whole ear, but more than a little cut. Robert went to go grab the car and another hair dresser asked me if Aidan wanted to get back in the chair to finish his haircut. I looked at her incredulously and said, "Uh, no. He is not going back in that chair." Then I threw his blood-drenched cape on the front counter and left.

At first Robert and I thought that we could treat the wound and head down south for mini-golf. We stopped at Smith's and picked up band-aids, Neosporin, cotton balls, and a 7-UP (for morale). Even after bandaging Aidan up, the blood was still getting all over his seatbelt and shirt so we decided to go to Urgent Care.

All cleaned up!
The nurse said that in 28 years of nursing she had never seen anyone botch a haircut so badly, even a home haircut. The doctor asked, "Was he cutting Aidan's hair with a razor blade?" Nope, apparently, he just doesn't know how to use scissors.

When the darn ear finally stopped bleeding, we could see the damage wasn't too bad. It was mostly on the back of the ear where the scar won't be noticeable. Robert called Great Clips on the way home and they agreed to pay the $150 co-pay and throw in some free haircuts to boot. But I'm starting to think that it's time I learned how to wield a pair of scissors.
