It's summer! Yesterday was Aidan's last day of school, my weekends are full for the next three months, and walking outside with Stan is pleasant even at six in the morning.
This last week has already had some of the hallmarks of summer including an emphasis on getting outdoors and being one with nature. More than ever, I am realizing how truly outdoorsy Utahns are, and I love it. People hike in LA, but nothing like they do here. Utahns are the most rugged people I've ever met. Marathons? Forget about here. Here they run ultramarathons through Death Valley for fun. My husband put a post on Facebook asking for good hikes for dogs and received about 56 comments in a day. Even our church suspends Sunday services during the summer so that its congregants can focus on hiking and recreating.

First Church of Salt Lake City, but you get the point |
We've gotten in the spirit by doing some local hiking and taking long walks every night. My mom disapproves of Robert and I walking around the neighborhood after Aidan goes to sleep, but I think the minimal risk offsets the many benefits of long, romantic walks with my husband around our neighborhood. (Knock on wood)

In other noteworthy news, Robert recently acquired a 1980's arcade game for our basement, which perfectly accents the lack of furniture and permanent dog smell that has accrued down there. I've sensed, however, that Aidan's cool status has gone up with his friends since we brought Stunrunner home.

No coins necessary |
In end of school news, Aidan wrote an adorable thank you letter to his second grade teacher to thank her for being an awesome teacher this year. Sadly, the letter got a little messed up when he colored the front with marker and it bled through to the other side. Oh well. It's the thought that counts.

Last Friday, I also got to experience my first ever Lawyer Prom. Technically it was the "Salt Lake Bar Association Spring Dinner Dance" but essentially, it's Lawyer Prom. I am thrilled that my husband works in a profession that takes itself seriously enough to organize big, fancy dinners twice a year to celebrate themselves. I borrowed a dress, curled my hair, and busted out my wedding shoes. The result:

I love girlfriends that will take multiple pictures of you until you get the right one. Lenore is good like that. |
Sometimes, I think getting dressed up is more fun than the actual event though in this case, the actual event was pretty fun too. Lawyer Prom was held at the Salt Lake Country Club, which is super fancy and makes me feel like I crashed an adult party. There was even a beautiful rainbow over the golf course during happy hour which made me very happy indeed.

All in all, another great week in the Cummings household. Next week, I host book club and Aidan will be at Frankenscience camp. Robert will be on the second week of his 90 day workout challenge so maybe I will post on that to fuel his fire. See you all soon!
No church until September?!? That should be the first thing you tell interested parties.
ReplyDeleteRight!?! Apparently all Unitarians are called to go find God in nature for the next three months. Done!
DeleteAlso, be sure to watch out for rattlesnakes when hiking with your dog around these parts! Your dog looks like a cutie...the rattlers like morning and evening, I've stumbled across a few so far this season! And also a tarantula.
ReplyDeleteAnd I vote for Library Prom!!!!
Jessica, could you imagine if we tried to start Library Prom? First, the girl to guy ratio would be way off. Second, the grumbling over having to leave our sensible shoes at home for an evening. And I can just imagine all those librarians griping about how the money spent reserving the Country Club and ordering basil cream cheese hors d'oeuvres (which were delicious!) could be spent on summer reading programs and longer hours for branches. This is why we can't have nice things.
